The mission of making disciples has always begun in prayer. Before a word is spoken, before a step is taken, before a gift is given, God’s people bow before Him.
Through prayer, we align ourselves with what He is already doing, forming disciples of Jesus who live on mission wherever He sends them.
This heart for discipleship is at the center of Every Corner. Every Calling., the theme of Mission Matters Most. It reminds us that the call to follow Christ and help others follow Him is not limited by geography, age, or stage of life. From neighborhoods to nations, God is at work.
And He invites us to join Him, first through prayer.
Prayer Begins at Our Doorstep
Discipleship often looks ordinary.
It happens across the street, in the quiet rhythms of daily life:
- A mother praying with her child before school
- A church member opening Scripture with a new believer
- A student learning to share the gospel with a friend
- A teacher faithfully returning to God’s Word week after week
These moments may seem small, but they are eternal.
When we pray for disciples in our own communities, we are asking God to strengthen faith, deepen roots, and bear fruit in places we can see. Prayer reminds us that discipleship is not powered by our effort, but by His Spirit.
Prayer Reaches Beyond What We See
The mission does not stop at our doorstep.
The gospel is moving in places we may never visit, among people we may never meet. Yet through prayer, we are connected to them.
We pray for:
- Missionaries serving in unfamiliar cultures
- Leaders being trained to shepherd churches
- Believers facing hardship for their faith
- New disciples taking their first steps with Christ
When we pray for disciples around the world, our vision expands. We remember that the Church is not local alone—it is global. And the same Spirit at work in us is at work in them.
A Simple Way to Pray This Week
Sometimes we want to pray, but we just do not know where to start.
Here is a simple way to begin:
1. Look Close
Think of 2 to 3 people in your everyday life, your home, church, workplace, or neighborhood.
Pray that they would grow in love for God’s Word and faithfulness in following Christ.
2. Look Far
Pray for a missionary, ministry, or people group.
Ask God to strengthen believers, raise up leaders, and open doors for the gospel.
3. Look Within
Ask God to grow your own heart as a disciple.
Pray for obedience in the small, unseen places of your life.
You do not need perfect words. You just need a willing heart.
Sustaining Discipleship for Every Corner and Every Calling
For more than a century, Woman’s Missionary Union has equipped believers of all ages to grow as disciples who live on mission. That mission still matters most today.
Through Mission Matters Most, the WMU Foundation stewards generosity into the Vision Fund, supporting:
- missions discipleship resources
- leadership development
- compassion ministries that meet real needs and point to Jesus
When you give, you are not just supporting programs.
You are helping:
- children learn what it means to follow Christ
- students discover their place in God’s mission
- adults disciple others in their homes and churches
Your generosity helps sustain discipleship across the street and around the world.
A Life of Prayer and Participation
Prayer and giving are not separate from discipleship. They are part of it.
When we pray, we depend on God.
When we give, we participate in what He is doing beyond us.
So as you go about your week:
Pray for the people right in front of you.
Pray for believers across the world.
And ask God how He might use your life to strengthen disciples in every corner and every calling.
Because wherever God’s people bear His name, the mission matters. Make an impact today by giving to the Vision Fund.
